Roman is a rug collection that offers both style and practicality. Featuring a variety of designs with non-distinct all-over patterns in grey, terracotta, blue, and brown tones, these rugs are versatile and blend seamlessly with a variety of decor styles.

We chose Roman Bilby for the range because it covers a brief we get asked about constantly.

About the look

There's a reason grey has been the default neutral of the last decade — it forgives, it cools, and it lets coloured furniture and art read clearly above it. There is depth to the surface — the weave changes height subtly across the pattern, which is what gives the rug its tactile quality. From the kitchen looking through to the lounge, the rug reads as a single grounding plane rather than a competing pattern.

Day-to-day

In a real Australian room, it is a comfortable fit under the dining table of a Newtown terrace where space is tight and the rug has to do double duty — exactly the kind of space most of our customers are decorating. The synthetic fibre tolerates household cleaners better than wool, but in our experience nothing more aggressive than cool soapy water is ever necessary. Drag a chair, drop a fork, knock over the wine — this construction tolerates all three.

What's under the surface

Turkish-made. Turkey has been the centre of rug-making for centuries, and the power-loom tradition that came out of Anatolia in the late 20th century is what makes a piece like this possible at a sensible price. Lightweight, water-resistant, mould-resistant, and quietly comfortable underfoot — polypropylene is the rug fibre that does the most with the least. Look at the underside and you can see how dense the weave actually is — it is the part of the rug that does the real work.

Sizing

Most of our customers go a size larger than their first instinct. Our Rug Size Guide explains why.

This is the kind of rug that makes the rest of your decisions easier.

Things customers ask

Can I put a rug pad underneath?

Yes, and we'd recommend it on hard floors. A pad keeps the rug from slipping, adds a little extra softness underfoot, and helps the pile wear evenly over time.

Will the colour look the same as the website photo?

Very close, but never identical — every screen renders colour slightly differently, and the rug itself will read warmer or cooler depending on the light in your room. If you want certainty, message us and we'll send additional photos taken in natural light.

Does this rug ship rolled or folded?

Rolled. We ship every rug in our range rolled and wrapped — folding can leave a crease in the pile that takes a few weeks to settle out, so we avoid it.

Will the rug fade in direct sun?

Some fade is possible if a rug sits in direct, unfiltered sun day after day — that's true of any rug. The dyes used here are UV-stabilised and hold up well to the conditions in most Australian rooms.

How thick is the rug overall?

The total thickness includes the pile plus the backing — for most of our rugs, that ends up somewhere between 8mm and 30mm depending on the pile listed. If you need a precise figure for a door clearance, message us and we'll measure.
