We chose Plain Portland Shaggy Beige for the range because it covers a brief we get asked about constantly.

About the make

The short version: Belgian-woven. Belgian weaving has a reputation for precision, and you can see it in the way the pattern sits on the surface of this rug. The case for polypropylene in a family room is straightforward: it is cheaper to replace than upholstery and tougher to ruin than wool. With a 40mm pile, this is deep-shag territory — it will feel like sand between your toes, in the best way. Look at the underside and you can see how dense the weave actually is — it is the part of the rug that does the real work.

About the look

Beige is the most forgiving floor colour we carry — it hides dust, dog hair, and the small disasters of daily life better than almost any other shade. Tonally, the rug shifts subtly through the day — warmer in morning light, more grounded in the cooler hours of the afternoon. Visually, this is the kind of rug that does not introduce a new design statement — it ties the existing ones together.

How it handles real life

In a real Australian room, in any room with engineered oak in a natural finish, this rug adds the visual weight the floor needs to feel finished. Care for this one as you would a hard floor — sweep or vacuum regularly and address spills when they happen. The fibre does the rest. The pile does not snag, which matters if you have a clawed animal in the house. Vacuum once a week, spot-treat the inevitable accidents, and the rug does not ask for anything else.

Which size?

If you are between sizes, we almost always recommend sizing up. Our Rug Size Guide has the room-by-room measurements we use ourselves.

Plain Portland Shaggy Beige is one of the easier yeses in our range — solidly made, calmly priced, no surprises.

Questions we get asked

Will it sit flat once unrolled?

Almost always within 24–48 hours. If you see any waves from the rolled packaging, lay the rug pile-up in the room and let it relax overnight — gravity does the rest. For stubborn corners, rolling the rug briefly in the opposite direction usually does it.

Does the rug have a strong smell when it arrives?

There may be a faint factory or packaging smell on opening — it airs out within a day or two. Lay the rug out, open the windows, and it will settle quickly.

Will the rug fade in direct sun?

Some fade is possible if a rug sits in direct, unfiltered sun day after day — that's true of any rug. The dyes used here are UV-stabilised and hold up well to the conditions in most Australian rooms.

Will the pattern repeat be obvious?

Not on this construction. The pattern is woven across the full face of the rug rather than printed, so you won't see the kind of seam-like repetition you sometimes get with a printed surface.

Does this rug ship rolled or folded?

Rolled. We ship every rug in our range rolled and wrapped — folding can leave a crease in the pile that takes a few weeks to settle out, so we avoid it.
