What our family likes about Cappadocia Black is the lack of theatre — it is what it looks like, and it does what it should.

On the design

We sell more cream rugs than any other colour. They suit the way most Australians live: warm-neutral walls, pale timbers, lots of natural light. Classical medallion-and-border layout, but the colour palette has been softened so it sits comfortably in a contemporary room. In strong afternoon light the tones warm noticeably — in cooler southern light, the palette reads slightly more grounded.

Living with it

Day to day, among the rooms our customers describe to us, in a Tweed Heads beach house where the climate calls for something that handles humidity without complaint is the most common context for a piece like this. For everyday care, vacuum weekly and spot-clean spills as they happen — a damp cloth and a small amount of mild detergent handles almost anything. Build the room around it. It will hold the centre and stay quiet while the rest of the space changes around it.

About the make

The short version: From Turkey's long power-loom tradition. The Turkish weaving industry has refined power-loom production to a point where the result is genuinely close to the look of a traditionally woven rug. If a rug is going to sit in a room where life actually happens, polypropylene is the fibre we trust to handle it. Edges are bound and finished cleanly so they sit flat and stay flat.

Which size?

If this is going under a dining table, measure the table and add at least 60cm on each side so the chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. The Rug Size Guide walks through the details.

If you've been waiting for the rug that just feels right, this is one we'd line up first.

Common questions

Does the rug have a strong smell when it arrives?

There may be a faint factory or packaging smell on opening — it airs out within a day or two. Lay the rug out, open the windows, and it will settle quickly.

Is the back of the rug latex-coated?

The backing is a standard textile finish — it sits flat on the floor and won't mark timber boards. For hard floors, we'd still recommend a rug pad to keep it from sliding.

Will it sit flat once unrolled?

Almost always within 24–48 hours. If you see any waves from the rolled packaging, lay the rug pile-up in the room and let it relax overnight — gravity does the rest. For stubborn corners, rolling the rug briefly in the opposite direction usually does it.

Is the colour the same on both sides?

No — the pile side is the finished face. The reverse shows the construction and is usually a slightly different colour because the dye penetrates the surface rather than the entire fibre.

Can I return it if it isn't right?

Yes — we offer a clear returns window because we know a rug needs to be seen in the actual room. The details are on our returns page, and we'll talk you through it if anything is unclear.
