Imperial Sandstone earns its keep because it gets out of its own way.

On colour

What is happening at the surface is straightforward. There's a reason grey has been the default neutral of the last decade — it forgives, it cools, and it lets coloured furniture and art read clearly above it. There is enough texture in the weave to keep the surface visually interesting without breaking the calm of the palette. Photographs flatten the surface; in person, the weave reads with more dimension than any catalogue image can convey.

How it handles real life

In practice, it is a comfortable fit in a Sandy Bay heritage cottage where the floorboards are old and the rug has to soften everything underfoot — exactly the kind of space most of our customers are decorating. Cleaning protocol is intentionally simple: blot fresh spills, vacuum weekly, get a professional clean every few years if it sees heavy use. A good shake outdoors once a season and a regular vacuum is the whole maintenance story.

Built and finished

Underneath the look, Belgian-made with European precision. The Wilton tradition in Belgium produces rugs with extremely fine pattern detail — the kind of edge clarity that holds up under close inspection. We have lived with polypropylene rugs in our own homes for years. They survive children, vacuum cleaners, and the occasional small disaster without losing their shape. The 11mm pile sits in the sweet spot for everyday living — soft enough to feel good underfoot, short enough that the vacuum gets right to the base. Edges are bound and finished cleanly so they sit flat and stay flat.

Sizing

Sizes range across our usual run — if you're unsure which to pick, our Rug Size Guide walks through the common Australian room layouts.

Once Imperial Sandstone is laid, the room you've been trying to finish usually finishes itself.

Things customers ask

Do you offer samples?

We don't typically send physical samples — most of our customers find the photos and our written notes get them close enough. If you want extra photos in natural light, message us and we'll send them through.

Will it sit flat once unrolled?

Almost always within 24–48 hours. If you see any waves from the rolled packaging, lay the rug pile-up in the room and let it relax overnight — gravity does the rest. For stubborn corners, rolling the rug briefly in the opposite direction usually does it.

Can I return it if it isn't right?

Yes — we offer a clear returns window because we know a rug needs to be seen in the actual room. The details are on our returns page, and we'll talk you through it if anything is unclear.

Can I use this with underfloor heating?

Yes — the pile is not so dense that it traps heat, and the backing handles the moderate temperatures typical of residential underfloor systems.

Will the pattern repeat be obvious?

Not on this construction. The pattern is woven across the full face of the rug rather than printed, so you won't see the kind of seam-like repetition you sometimes get with a printed surface.
