Basolt Basalt earns its keep because it gets out of its own way.

Practical notes

In a typical Australian living room — limestone tiles, putty-painted walls — it sits comfortably without competing for attention. For wine, blood, or any pigmented spill, blot quickly with cold water and a mild detergent — the colour will lift before it has time to bond. The pile does not snag, which matters if you have a clawed animal in the house. Build the room around it. It will hold the centre and stay quiet while the rest of the space changes around it.

On the design

Looked at honestly, the design is doing two things. There's a reason grey has been the default neutral of the last decade — it forgives, it cools, and it lets coloured furniture and art read clearly above it. There is depth to the surface — the weave changes height subtly across the pattern, which is what gives the rug its tactile quality. We have laid this in rooms with bold artwork above and minimal furniture, and it sits comfortably in both.

About the make

Underneath the look, made in Turkey. Turkey has been the centre of rug-making for centuries, and the power-loom tradition that came out of Anatolia in the late 20th century is what makes a piece like this possible at a sensible price. If a rug is going to sit in a room where life actually happens, polypropylene is the fibre we trust to handle it. At 4mm the pile is short and tight — the structure underneath is doing most of the work, which is what gives a flatweave its longevity. Pile twist and density together are what give this piece the longevity that the warranty implies.

On sizing

A 200x290cm covers most three-seater living rooms; a 240x330cm suits the larger open-plan layouts that have become common in new Australian builds. Our Rug Size Guide shows you which fits.

Basolt Basalt is one of the easier yeses in our range — solidly made, calmly priced, no surprises.

Questions we get asked

Will the colour look the same as the website photo?

Very close, but never identical — every screen renders colour slightly differently, and the rug itself will read warmer or cooler depending on the light in your room. If you want certainty, message us and we'll send additional photos taken in natural light.

Will it cope with kids and pets?

Yes, comfortably. Synthetic pile is stain-resistant, doesn't snag under claws, and lifts spills cleanly. It's the construction we recommend most to growing families.

Is the back of the rug latex-coated?

The backing is a standard textile finish — it sits flat on the floor and won't mark timber boards. For hard floors, we'd still recommend a rug pad to keep it from sliding.

Will this rug shed?

No, not in the meaningful sense. Synthetic pile is heat-set rather than spun from short staple fibres, so you may see a small amount of fibre in the first week and very little after that.

Will the rug fade in direct sun?

Some fade is possible if a rug sits in direct, unfiltered sun day after day — that's true of any rug. The dyes used here are UV-stabilised and hold up well to the conditions in most Australian rooms.
