What's under the surface
Underneath the look, carefully made for everyday family use. What matters with this piece is the construction — it's made to take real family use without fuss. Polypropylene fibre handles wine, juice, and muddy paws with a damp cloth and a bit of patience — which is why we recommend it to most growing families. A 8mm pile feels soft on bare feet but doesn't trap dust the way a longer pile can. Look at the underside and you can see how dense the weave actually is — it is the part of the rug that does the real work.
About the look
What is happening at the surface is straightforward. There's a reason grey has been the default neutral of the last decade — it forgives, it cools, and it lets coloured furniture and art read clearly above it. The pattern reads cleanly from across the room and only reveals its detail close up. From the kitchen looking through to the lounge, the rug reads as a single grounding plane rather than a competing pattern.
Day-to-day
Built for indoor-outdoor use — the flat construction handles weather, the dye is UV-stabilised, and a hose-down sees off most of what an Australian summer can throw at it. Cleaning protocol is intentionally simple: blot fresh spills, vacuum weekly, get a professional clean every few years if it sees heavy use. It tolerates open doors, indoor-outdoor traffic, and the dust that an Australian summer drags in across a polished concrete floor.
Which size?
If this is going under a dining table, measure the table and add at least 60cm on each side so the chairs stay on the rug when pulled out. The Rug Size Guide walks through the details.
Choose Alaska Grey Cream if you want the result more than you want the story.
FAQs
Does the rug have a strong smell when it arrives?
There may be a faint factory or packaging smell on opening — it airs out within a day or two. Lay the rug out, open the windows, and it will settle quickly.
How thick is the rug overall?
The total thickness includes the pile plus the backing — for most of our rugs, that ends up somewhere between 8mm and 30mm depending on the pile listed. If you need a precise figure for a door clearance, message us and we'll measure.
Is the colour the same on both sides?
No — the pile side is the finished face. The reverse shows the construction and is usually a slightly different colour because the dye penetrates the surface rather than the entire fibre.
Will the rug fade in direct sun?
The dye on this construction is specifically UV-stabilised for outdoor use — it holds up to direct Australian sun in a way that an indoor rug never could.
Do you offer samples?
We don't typically send physical samples — most of our customers find the photos and our written notes get them close enough. If you want extra photos in natural light, message us and we'll send them through.
