Walk into a finished room with Albona Blue White Wool laid in it and the rug is the last thing you notice, in the best possible way.
On the design
Grey rugs sit quietly in a room and let the rest of the space do the talking — it's why they outsell almost everything else we carry. There is enough texture in the weave to keep the surface visually interesting without breaking the calm of the palette. Across a 200x290cm or 240x330cm, that calm reads as confidence rather than absence.
How it's made
The short version: Made in India by skilled artisans. Hand-weaving in India still happens at village scale, and the irregularities you'll feel in the pile are part of what makes a hand-loomed rug feel different from a machine-made one. A wool rug behaves differently from a synthetic one. It sheds lightly for the first few months (that's normal), then settles into a piece you'll keep for decades. A 10mm pile feels soft on bare feet but doesn't trap dust the way a longer pile can. Run your hand across the surface and the pile feels even from corner to corner — that consistency is what separates a well-made rug from a budget one.
Practical notes
In practice, among the rooms our customers describe to us, in mid-century homes where the bones of the house do the talking is the most common context for a piece like this. Avoid harsh cleaners on wool. Blotting cool water onto a fresh spill, then dabbing dry, is the right first move. We have laid one of these under our own dining table for several years; it still reads as new.
Picking the right size
For sizing, the short version is: front legs of the sofa should sit on the rug. For the long version, see our Rug Size Guide.
Order with confidence: this is one of the pieces our customers most often write back to tell us about.
Things customers ask
Does the rug have a strong smell when it arrives?
There may be a faint factory or packaging smell on opening — it airs out within a day or two. Lay the rug out, open the windows, and it will settle quickly.
How thick is the rug overall?
The total thickness includes the pile plus the backing — for most of our rugs, that ends up somewhere between 8mm and 30mm depending on the pile listed. If you need a precise figure for a door clearance, message us and we'll measure.
Is the colour the same on both sides?
No — the pile side is the finished face. The reverse shows the construction and is usually a slightly different colour because the dye penetrates the surface rather than the entire fibre.
How do I get rid of a stain?
Blot immediately with a clean dry cloth — don't rub. For most spills, cool water and a tiny amount of wool-safe detergent will do it. For wine or anything stubborn, call a professional rug cleaner rather than scrubbing it yourself.
Will it cope with kids and pets?
Yes — wool is naturally stain-resistant and has been used in family homes for centuries. The fibre tolerates real life better than people often expect.
